John and Rhonda were both raised in
Maine. Rhonda grew up in the southern part of the state until she
went to college. She attended The University of Maine - Farmington
(UMF) where she received a B.A. in Psychology. Following this, she
moved to Richmond, Virginia where she earned her Master of Social
Work (MSW) from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Rhonda
worked in the social work field for nine years, the last
five specializing in therapeutic foster care. This is when she and
John received "the call" about purchasing Castle Island Camps which
had been in Rhonda's family since 1929. Rhonda enjoys staying
active through running, hiking (with Moose!), skiing, and
snowshoeing. She also enjoys scrapbooking, reading, traveling and
spending time with her family.
John grew up in Alna (huh?), a
little town near the coast. He received his B.A. in Psychology from
UMF and his MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University (see the
trend?). John worked as a social worker/therapist for over ten
years in a variety of capacities. He was also able to combine his
professional skills with his love of the outdoors by participating
in several wilderness trips with at-risk youth. John enjoys
fishing, archery hunting, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and spending
time with a houseful of girls! Who knew a licensed therapist could
make the transition to carpenter, plumber, electrician, cook and
dishwasher?
John and Rhonda have three lovely
daughters - Lydia, Lizzy, and Paige.
Lydia will be entering her senior year this fall, then it is off to
College. Her biggest achievement the last year was obtaining
her drivers license. She is one of the two full time
waitresses at Castle Island in the summer. During the school
year she was on the ski team, her team finished 3rd at the State
meet. This Spring she will try her hand at tennis.
Can't believe that she was just turning six
when we started our journey at Castle Island. She
will be busy the next year visiting colleges, filling out
applications and planning for her future.
Lizzy will
be a freshman next year, WOW. She is still the same girl we've all
known and loved. She's a real joker, just like her dad. She enjoys
anything social; games, swimming, fishing, etc. She has developed
a special bond with so many of the kids that come to the camp;
watching them all grow up together has been fun. She loves, loves,
loves basketball but if the high school doesn't have a J.V. team
next year she is willing to make the switch to downhill ski racing
like her sister. She will definitely play soccer and has been a
real intimidating force on the field, all I can say is don't get in
her way.
Paige, She's the youngest and will
be a 5th grader next year. Paige has such a busy summer schedule
with all the friends that she has made at the camps. During the
summer, there is a stretch where she has almost 7 weeks filled with
at least one close guest at camp. She has reached just about every
milestone there is at the camps from fishing, swimming, jumping off
the bridge, tubing, biking etc. During the school year she still
loves skiing; has played soccer and other sports. |
