John and Rhonda were both raised in
Maine. Rhonda grew up in the southern part of the state until she
went to collage. She attended The University of Maine - Farmington
(UMF) where she received a B.A. in Psychology. Following this, she
moved to Richmond, Virginia where she earned her Master of Social
Work (MSW) from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Rhonda
worked in the social work field for nine years, the last
five specializing in therapeutic foster care. This is when she and
John received "the call" about purchasing Castle Island Camps which
had been in Rhonda's family since 1929. Rhonda enjoys staying
active through running, hiking (with Moose!), skiing, and
snowshoeing. She also enjoys scrapbooking, reading, traveling and
spending time with her family.
John grew up in Alna (huh?), a
little town near the coast. He received his B.A. in Psychology from
UMF and his MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University (see the
trend?). John worked as a social worker/therapist for over ten
years in a variety of capacities. He was also able to combine his
professional skills with his love of the outdoors by participating
in several wilderness trips with at-risk youth. John enjoys
fishing, archery hunting, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and spending
time with a houseful of girls! Who knew a licensed therapist could
make the transition to carpenter, plumber, electrician, cook and
dishwasher?
John and Rhonda have three lovely
daughters - Lydia, Lizzy, and Paige. Lydia spent the first two
weeks of her life in Virginia and then moved, with her parents, to
Maine. She is a H.S. freshman and enjoys a very busy social life
aided by her love of all things technological! Lydia plays field
hockey for her school and likes skiing. She has enjoyed her
experiences at Castle Island and has made so many wonderful
friends. Lydia is adventurous and eager to try new things. She
likes to waterski and tube and didn't hesitate to plunge into the
lake from a 20 foot high rock!
Lizzy was 3 when she moved to
Castle Island and has always thrived in this environment. She loves
swimming, jumping off the bridge and dock, kayaking, and fishing. She caught her first big pike last
year and was so excited! One of the things Lizzy loves the most is
reconnecting each season with friends that she has made. Her
favorite food is chocolate and she loves to just hang out on the
dock with her friends. Lizzy is a fun creative person who love the
camps. (note to reader: this bio. was written by Lizzy, edited by
her mom!)
Paige was born into the Castle
Island tradition during our second season and has therefore spent
her entire life at the camps! Paige loves her experiences at Castle
Island and we have all enjoyed watching her reach various milestones
- catching fish, swimming, riding her bike and most recently,
jumping off the big dock! Paige is a social butterfly and loves
visiting with guests of all ages. Where else can one joyfully watch
a 7 year old and a 70 year old converse about art and insects? Paige
is in second grade and likes to play soccer and ski. |
